On the occasion of our recent book event in Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Citizen published the opening pages of The Caring Company.

Rather than an abstract introduction, these first pages deliberately begin with a concrete situation — a moment of ordinary work that reveals something deeper about how companies are designed, whom they truly serve, and what they prioritise when no one is watching. This is where the book starts: not with theory, but with lived reality.

The excerpt sets the tone for the entire argument that follows. It introduces our central claim: that businesses can only contribute durably to society — and prosper in the long run — if they orient their core activities toward serving their business ecosystems unconditionally, rather than treating care as an add-on or a moral supplement.

We are grateful to The Philadelphia Citizen for offering its readers this first encounter with the book, and for situating the discussion within a city long shaped by civic engagement and public debate.
